JIM WEINBERG
Tips from Our Percussionist Expert, Jim Weinberg!

"I stood and watched Jim Weinberg perform on drums in Las Vegas time after time after time at the Tropicana when I was with the late Pearl Bailey in the Main Showroom, Superstar Theatre. Jim is by far, next to Buddy Rich, the Best Drummer I've ever heard, and NOW most likely the best Alive Today"
- The Great LOUIS BELLSON

"Nothing pleases me more than a youngster who has that soul for music, and the ambition and tenacity to become the best ... because I want to become a part of their success ... "

-Jim Weinberg
Growing Up

"Even then, my husband and I knew that Jim was going to be a drummer for the rest of his life ... "
James Henry Weinberg was born to his parents John and Ruth Weinberg of Raytown, Missouri.

"Even then, my husband John and I knew that Jim was going to be a drummer for the rest of his life. From the age of four to the age of seven, he was practicing on his own ... all over the house ... whenever he had the chance to."

It wasn't long before news of Jim's rhythmic talents spread beyond the walls of the Weinberg’s' home. The famed Kansas City Chiefs Bandleader, Tony DiPardo saw Jim and knew right away that "this kid was a talent."Tony went out and bought Jim his first set of drum sticks, practice pad and a snare drum. DiPardo gave it to him as a gift to show his support for this rising star. Soon after, Jim began lessons with the famed drummer and teacher, Bud Lashley.

By the age of 11, Jim was a member of the Kansas City Musicians Union, working every night at the "Funhouse," K.C.'s local "hot spot."Marty Graham, the "Funhouse's" famed owner, took an interest in this young talent and put Jim and his band to work six and sometimes seven nights a week, drawing standing room only crowds and lines out the door and down the street coming to see this young talent and "his" band.

People saw Jim at night at "the club" and wanted him to teach their children drums. At 13--still working the "Funhouse"--Jim not only kept up a rigorous school schedule, but also found time to teach the craft he was becoming famous for to some 35 students."Making more money than me," said his Dad."Before the end of high school he bought himself three new cars, all on his own.Heck, he had better credit at the bank than I did!"

But Jim wasn't only playing to the "partying" crowds downtown. When Kansas City had it's very first Jazz Festival at the Municipal Auditorium downtown it was Jim and his "Kansas City Junior Kix Band," playing Woody Herman Charts, during the evening show.He did so well he was called back three years in a row for repeat performances.
The Masters Meet

"Jim is the greatest drummer I've ever worked with." This is what LLOYD LINDROTH said after hiring him.

At the same time Jim was ending high school, the president of the local musician's union was moving on to New York and invited Jim to Chicago to fill in with the Glenn Miller Band for a few nights. This was only the first of a great number of appearances over the next few years that Jim would make with various bands and show groups all around the country.

It was on one of these trips that Jim met Lloyd Lindroth, while the world-reknowned harpist was doing his concert at the famed Muehlbach Hotel in Kansas City.

Lindroth, who was looking for a new drummer to go on to Las Vegas with his show, asked Jim to audition for him.

Jim was hired on the spot, despite his age, and despite the problems Lindroth knew he would have to face even getting the young drummer into the casinos and resorts of Las Vegas.

With his first Vegas show only a short time away, Jim immediately went out and bought a brand new set of Musser vibes (gold plated keys) and was on his way to Las Vegas to play at the famed "Blue Room" at the Tropicana Hotel where Lindroth was a regular.

Their first engagement at the Tropicana ended 26 weeks later, with the harpist convinced that Jim was "the greatest drummer I had ever worked with."

Over the next three years, Lindroth and Jim played the Vegas circuit together, where Jim would eventually have the opportunity to meet the likes of (his idol) Louis Bellson, Pearl Bailey, Ed Mc Mahan , Bobby Riggs, Clint Eastwood, Elvis, Liberace and many, many more stars of the Las Vegas Strip.

Today, Jim is settled in Kansas City, Missouri, direct from.. "Music City, USA," Nashville, Tennessee where he does studio jobs, teaches and is desirous "of traveling the USA and the world as a clinician, teaching all the rudiments I've learned to would-be drummers who really want to play correctly", Jim says."

"Most importantly, I want today's generation to keep it alive! Nothing pleases me more than a youngster who has, that soul for music, and the ambition and tenacity to become the best ... because I want to become a part of their success," he says.

This quote from the wonderful Joe Williams was heard in person by our friend and Senior VP of Harpland , our famed drummer Jim Weinberg.

Jim has given HarpLand reinforcement of our beliefs and what we stand for. Quality music, live music everywhere and striving to revive Big Bands, great music and most importantly places to perform for these great musicians with the hope that our younger generation will get to see and hear this without having to drink or smoke and at an affordable price. This is just out of range and is NOT too much for today’s younger generation and will help this marvelous art form of great music to survive.

Pictured above is our very own Jim Weinberg as he begins his tour of the NEW Remo Drum Factory in California.
In the middle is Mr. Remo Belli, Founder and owner of Remo Drums and Jim Weinberg.

On behalf of Mr. Irwin, Mr. Weinberg and myself I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Belli for taking so much of his time that day, being so gracious to show us around and talk music for so long.

Michlind and Harpland are growing rapidly and we are very, very proud to have Mr. Weinberg on board to help us plan our strategy which will launch our talents into the 21st Century with new innovative ideas and quality presentations with Mr. Weinberg's expert experience and creative ideas.
Jim Weinberg ( jazz drummer ) came along with a part of his Musser vibes ( the gold ones , same as Hamp uses ) and just wanted his signature on it.Not an autograph seeker , Weinberg looked over at Lionel and said , he's sitting down. His left isn't moving at all..

This is not why Jim came either. A tear welled up in Weinberg's eyes. Sadly , he watched in awe. The Big Band was doing just fine. The audience was there. Oh , yeah.....were they ever there. They were there for the same reason we were.To pay homage , to show respect , to applaud a legend and to thank a man with musical ability that went so far back in American History , Jazz History that we were not there , even our father's were not able to tell us all about this ICON of a man.

After all , Weinberg and I did not come to this event to see how much publicity Hamp was getting nor do we really care after giving it some thought. The crowd was there .Hamp's fans were there. We were there to see the man do what he has done for decades. We were happy just to be able to pay our tribute in our little way to a legend that gave us music for decades and decades relentlessly and with pride and he was the best and only one left from the swing era..

Well, Hamp, Weinberg (jazz drummer) and I (journalist and music lover) came to hear just those words, and what you love to play, no matter what it is.

Nashville, TN will never ever have this wonderful feeling of your music live and in person again just like it was tonight. You gave all you have to give and as you could see, we were there for you.You and your Big Band may return again to Nashville. But you know what? You can count on Weinberg and I to promote the heck out of your appearance. To which he replied, "would you like to hear your favorite?"

...
NOTE: Mr. Weinberg can repair or reproduce identical parts and make stronger, retaining the same shape as original by using stronger metals of any that you are missing, can't locate from the manufacturer or repair yourself. Example: Cast parts would NOT be cast but would be cut from a solid block of metal such as brass, steel, etc. This is for ANY part for ANY drum set . If you have a broken metal part that you can't repair or replace, send an Email describing your problem.Chances are he can help you.Of course, wooden parts are certaintly no problem from drum shells to clarinet bells.Understand, he does not make a living at this , but wishes to offer the service for help to those that need it.He knows how frustrating it can be to NOT being able to find that ONE piece that you really need. You may Email Mr. Weinberg for this purpose only at Weinberg@HarpLandMusic.Com.Also, be sure to check in from time to time and see the "Tips For Drummers" from his soon to be released book "Tips & Tricks for Serious Drummers" at

The Drum Company which Mr. Weinberg would endorse and recommend to you. Many of you have asked and, as you know, he would never commit to one name brand in his reply to your email or letters, such as, REMO, LUDWIG, PEARL, YAMAHA, TAMA or a SLINGERLAND. He says that he has given it some thought, traveled to several locations, seen the factories, met the makers and will soon have the name that will remain the Drum Set of Quality that you should play and that he will stand by and back. Mr. Weinberg takes these questions of yours very seriously when he goes through all his Email and Letters. Before he gives an answer. he wants to have all good reasons to give you when you ask WHY? Another service to New Talent. Spread the word.
